Parenting Coordination

Parenting Coordination is a child-focused dispute resolution process that combines a number of different elements including:

  • parent education
  • dispute assessment
  • mediation
  • coaching
  • conflict management

Ideally, the parenting coordinator will be able to resolve conflict between the parents through a mediated and agreed upon solution between the parties, but when all else fails the parenting coordinator might be granted the power to arbitrate.

Parenting coordination typically occurs in the aftermath of child custody proceedings. It is often needed after the Court has ruled on custodial arrangements and problems have developed with respect to issues such as visitation schedule, communication between the parents, and Court mandated arrangements because of the ongoing and unremitting conflict between the parents. The parenting coordinator is asked to step in in the midst of the parents’ dispute to de-escalate parental conflict, promote the children’s optimal adjustment and to resolve disputes in a timely and cost effective manner without resorting to litigation.
