Forensic Evaluations

What is a forensic evaluation?

Forensic evaluations are evaluations ordered by a Court to answer a psycho-legal question. Depending on the nature of the referral question and type of evaluation, these evaluations vary with regard to complexity and length. The forensic question may pertain to civil matters (e.g., worker compensation, custody) or to criminal matters (e.g., competency to stand trial, not guilty by reason of insanity, mitigating factors in criminal offenses.)

Are forensic evaluations confidential in nature?

Forensic evaluations are typically non-confidential in nature as they are ordered by the Court, who is considered “the client.”

Are the costs of forensic evaluations covered by insurance?

Typically the cost of forensic evaluations is not covered by insurance and the burden of the cost will fall on the person who is being evaluated. Or, in cases of financial hardship, might be covered by state/city funds.
